DOWNHOLE MOTOR
The downhole motor is a type of downhole power device used in oil and gas drilling. It drives the drill bit to rotate through the hydraulic energy of the drilling fluid, without relying on the surface rotary table or top drive system. It is directly installed at the bottom of the drill string, providing torque and rotational speed to the drill bit. It is suitable for complex drilling operations such as directional drilling and horizontal wells.

- Core definition and types:The downhole motor is a downhole tool that converts the hydraulic/electrical energy of the drilling fluid into mechanical energy to directly drive the drill bit. It is mainly divided into three categories.
- Piston motor: The most commonly used, volumetric type, outputs torque through the rotation of the rotor and stator sealed chambers.
- Turbine drilling tool: Driven by the impact of the drilling fluid on the turbine blades, it rotates at a high speed with low torque.
- Electric drilling tools: Driven by downhole motors, unaffected by drilling fluid parameters, and capable of being intelligent.
- Working principle:Stator: Elastic bushing with helical cavity; Rotor: Metal screw (The number of stator heads is one more than that of the rotor)

DownHole Motor
- High-pressure drilling fluid is injected through the drill pipe, driving the rotor to perform planetary motion within the stator, creating a continuous sealed cavity that moves axially and converting hydraulic energy into torque and rotational speed.
- The torque is transmitted to the drill bit through the universal joint and the drive shaft, while the drilling fluid simultaneously cools, lubricates and carries the cuttings out.
- Work method: Sliding drilling (directional drilling): The drill string does not rotate; only the motor drives the drill bit. Combined with a bent housing, it precisely controls well deviation and azimuth, and is used for creating and maintaining well inclination in directional wells/horizontal wells.
Composite drilling: The drill string and the motor rotate simultaneously; it enhances the mechanical drilling rate, reduces friction and slippage, and prolongs the life of the drill bit, suitable for vertical wells and stable inclined sections.
- Purpose: The downhole motor is used for precise slope formation and stability maintenance in directional wells and horizontal wells, for sidetracking and window opening in old wells, for increasing the speed of straight wells in hard formations, and can also be used for special downhole operations such as coring, reaming, and well repair.
- Future development trends: The downhole motor will evolve towards intelligence, high efficiency, long lifespan, multi-type drive and integration in the future: Built-in sensors enable real-time monitoring and adaptive drilling, and heat-resistant and wear-resistant materials extend the single-trip service life; High power and miniaturization are carried out simultaneously, suitable for ultra-deep wells and small wellbores; Electric drive/hybrid technology breaks free from the dependence on drilling fluid, and at the same time deeply integrates with the rotating steering system to achieve fully automatic trajectory control, helping with green and low-carbon drilling.
