Tricone bits
Tricone bits are one of the most classic rock-breaking tools used in oil and gas as well as water well drilling. They achieve this by using three separate rotating tongs to convert the rotational power of the drill string into impact and shear forces on the rock. To achieve efficient crushing, it relies on mature technology and excellent adaptability, and is still the main tool for drilling in hard formations to this day.

The tricone bits consist of a flange, a cone, hard alloy teeth, a bearing system and a water eye. During operation, the drill string drives the drill bit to rotate around a central axis. At the same time, the three cones rotate independently. The hard alloy teeth break the rock by a combination of impact and shearing. The drilling fluid passes through the water eye to promptly remove the cuttings, preventing repeated crushing.
Teicone bits are mainly used in medium-hard to hard strata during oil and gas drilling, in hard rock formations of water wells and geothermal drilling, and for drilling in hard strata such as mine ventilation holes and foundation pit holes in mining and infrastructure projects. Its core advantages include efficient rock breaking, longer service life and greater adaptability.

Our company’s products cover mainstream models such as IADC, 637R, 637, 617, 537, 517, 437, etc. The 637R model is equipped with a rubber-sealed bearing structure, which effectively reduces wear in the underground environment and significantly extends the life of the drill bit and improves the stability of the operation. The outer diameter of the drill bit ranges from 8 1/2 inches to 17 1/2 inches. The connecting threads adopt the API REG standard thread type and can be seamlessly adapted to the mainstream drill pipe system, meeting the operational requirements for different drilling depths and diameters.
In medium-hard to hard abrasive formations, the 537 model achieves efficient drilling through its combined impact and shear rock-breaking design. When dealing with high-hardness formations such as granite, the 637R model’s high wear-resistant structure ensures a long continuous operation time. For plastic formations like mudstone, the 437 model’s anti-mud bag design prevents the drill bit from getting stuck.

Compared with other drill bits as PDC, its core advantages lie in full wellbore adaptability, high wellbore quality, reliable structure, excellent comprehensive cost performance, lower procurement and maintenance costs and a complete global support service and remanufacturing system, which can meet the needs of various drilling projects.
The future development trend focuses on material upgrading, intelligent interconnection, structural innovation and green recycling as its core directions. Through nano hard alloys and laser surface strengthening durability is enhanced, and integrated sensors enable intelligent monitoring of working conditions. The development of tricone bits + PDC composite structure consolidates advantages in complex formations. At the same time the re-manufacturing system is improved to reduce the life cycle cost. In emerging energy scenarios such as geothermal development and sidetracking of old wells, the demand continues to grow, and the global market steadily expands. Domestic leading enterprises dominate technological upgrades, and the global market grows steadily, moving towards high-performance, intelligent drilling tools with good cost-effectiveness.
